Clanton. Recruits came from Greene, Montgomery, Pickens, Randolph, and Shelby counties. Ordered to Pollard, the regiment remained in that vicinity for nearly a year. In the fall of 1864, the 7th reported to Gen'l Nathan Bedford Forrest at Corinth, Mississippi and was reassigned to Rucker's Brigade. It took part in the raid on Johnsonville and was engaged in the fighting as Gen'l John Bell Hood moved up to Nashville. The 7th also bore the brunt of the night attack of the enemy at Brentwood, suffering severely in killed and wounded. During Hood's retreat, the regiment fought daily and nightly, repelling the repeated assaults of the enemy's swarm of cavalry. When the 7th reached Corinth, only 64 rank and file (effectives) were left of the 350 with which it began the campaign. After recruiting a few weeks, the regiment joined Gen'l Abraham Buford, at Montevallo, 300 strong. Ordered to West Florida, the 7th reached Greenville, then turned and confronted Union Gen'l James Wilson's Corps from Benton to Girard, fighting and obstructing his march. At Girard, the regiment was in the line and took part in the last fighting of the great war. S. War Department effective March 25, 1905. In the War Department records, the flag which was given capture number 534 is described as "colors of the Clanton Alabama Brig. captured by the 2nd Ind'a Cavalry, 2nd Brigade 1st Division Cavalry Corps M. D. M. near Montgomery, Ala. April 12th, 1865." In his report dated April 25, 1865, Colonel O. H. LaGrange referred to it as the flag of Clanton's Brigade and described it as being made of "blue silk with inscriptions." By the time the flag was returned to Alabama, it had been rolled into a clump and had become stiff and brittle with age. Due to the fragile nature of the flag, it remained in this condition until it received conservation treatment by Textile Preservation Associates, Inc. of Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1997. Once this work was completed and the full design of the flag could be viewed, the attribution to Clanton's Brigade became questionable. The obverse of the flag bears the motto, "Our Homes, Our Rights, We Entrust to Your Keeping, Brave Sons of Alabama" and seven stars linked together by a chain. The reverse bears an illustration of the goddess of liberty breaking her manacles and the motto, "Tyrany [sic] is Hateful to the Gods." The use of seven stars is common on flags made after the formation of the Confederacy, but before the beginning of the War. After the War began and additional states seceded, seven star flags became obsolete. Clanton's Brigade was not formed until the spring of 1863, so the use of a seven star pre-war flag by them was questionable. Additional research revealed a description of the flag in Rear Admiral George Henry Preble's book, Origin and History of the American Flag, originally published in 1872. Preble had received the description of the flag from Charles Brandt of the U. S. War Department. In his letter dated November 18, 1871, Brandt described the flag as "an Alabama State Flag, originally of white silk containing on one side the coat of arms and motto of the state, on the other, surmounted by seven stars linked together, a scroll inscribed, 'Our homes, Our Rights, We entrust to your Keeping, Brave sons of Alabama.'" It is important to note that at no time did Brandt attribute the flag to Clanton's Brigade, and he referred to it as having been "originally white," while LaGrange's 1865 report described Clanton's Brigade flag as blue. This may indicate that LaGrange was referring to a different flag in his report, and that the Clanton's Brigade attribution was made in error when the flag was sent from the U. S. War Department in 1905. In addition, while the flag had been assigned capture number 534, this number appears nowhere on the flag. This flag was finally identified in December, 1999 when a newspaper article was located describing the presentation of a flag to the Hayneville Guards. The Weekly Herald, March 14, 1861 published at Benton in Lowndes County, Alabama noted that, "We were in Hayneville on the 28 ult. (February 28) and witnessed the presentation of a beautiful flag to the Hayneville Guards.... The flag was of the finest material, and the painting well executed. On the front is a figure of the Goddess of Liberty with broken manacles, and the motto 'Tyranny is Hateful to the Gods.' On the other side seven stars were linked together and the inscription 'Our Homes, our Rights we Intrust to Your Keeping, Brave Sons of Alabama.'" The flag was presented by Miss Rebecca O. Powell on behalf of the ladies and received by J. J. Willingham. The Hayneville Guards eventually became Co. E, 6th Alabama Infantry. The flag was either left behind when the regiment left for Virginia, or was returned home for safekeeping after they arrived. The mystery of exactly how the flag fell into Federal hands remains unsolved. However, it may have been taken from a private home in Hayneville when the town was occupied on April 11, 1865. The forces of Major General James H. Wilson remained in Hayneville overnight, before proceeding to Montgomery the next day. On April 12, 1865 Wilson's troopers paraded through Montgomery. In her diary, Sarah G. Follansbee noted that "conquered banners were numerous." As she watched the procession, Sarah noted that, "we saw the conquered Hayneville banner several times--knew it by the word Tyranny being spelled with one n. We had seen it before the conquest."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/0885/0710/files/E15B4A54-5D1E-4250-BC08-FDBD1A64F498.png?v=1774007976
1st-alabama-infantry-island-10-house-flag
1st Alabama Infantry - Island 10 Flag Stickers

Each purchase comes with three stickers.

The original flag and details can be found here.

The flag of the 1st Alabama Infantry was made in Montgomery, Alabama, sometime after March 4, 1861. The flag is identical to the original Confederate national flag raised on that date except that it has a map of Alabama in the center of the circle of seven stars. The fact that there are seven stars indicates that the flag was made before the firing on Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861. Following the bombardment and surrender of Ft. Sumter, four additional states seceded and the Confederate flag subsequently had eleven stars. This flag was presented to the regiment at Ft. Barrancas near Pensacola, Florida, in the spring or summer of 1861. In his history of the 1st Alabama Infantry, Edward Young McMorries noted that the flag was sent by "the ladies of Montgomery." The map, within the circle of stars, on the canton of the flag, shows the route of the regiment from Montgomery to Pensacola and the white center bar includes the inscription "1st Regiment 12m Volunteers." Both the map and inscription were painted at the time the flag was manufactured. Following the bombardment of Ft. Pickens on nearby Santa Rosa Island, the regiment was allowed to add the battle honor "November 22nd and 23rd, 1861" to commemorate their service in the battle. In a broadside dated December 18, 1861 Governor John Gill Shorter praised the service of the 1st Alabama Infantry and made particular mention of the flag: "See the glorious banner, immortalized by the inscription, 22nd and 23rd November 1861 as it streams out upon the breeze." The flag was carried by the regiment until they were surrendered at Island Number 10, near New Madrid, Missouri, on April 8, 1862. Following the surrender, the flag was kept as a souvenir by Brigadier General Eleazer Authur Paine. The flag eventually passed to Paine's son Phelps, who settled in Omaha, Nebraska. Phelps was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic (Union veterans of the Civil War) and the flag was apparently displayed at their headquarters. When he died in 1919, the flag remained with the local GAR camp. In 1949, the GAR collections were transferred to the Nebraska Historical Society. The flag remained there, unidentified, until May 2006 when James Hanson, former director of the Nebraska Historical Society, notified Howard Madaus of its existence. Madaus, the nation's foremost expert on Civil War flags determined that the flag was that of an Alabama regiment. On June 1, 2006, Madaus contacted Curator Robert Bradley at the Alabama Department of Archives and History who verified that it was the flag of the 1st Alabama Infantry presented at Ft. Barrancas in 1861. Bradley then contacted Deb Arenz, senior curator at the Nebraska Historical Society, who later proposed that the flag be deaccessioned and returned to Alabama. On May 23, 2007, in a ceremony near the U.S. Capitol, the flag was returned to the state of Alabama in an official ceremony. On hand to receive the flag were Director Edwin C. Flags of this pattern were manufactured in Mobile by Jackson O. Belknap and issued within the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana. Since the flag bears an appliqued unit designation for the 2nd Alabama Infantry, it must have been issued prior to the unit being redesignated as the 63rd Alabama Infantry in July, 1864. It was captured on April 9, 1865 at Blakeley, Alabama by Sgt. George F. Rebman, Co. B, 119th Illinois Infantry. Sergeant Rebman was recommended for and later received the Congressional Medal of Honor. On April 12, 1865, the flag along with others was forwarded to Lt. Col. C. T. Christensen, Assistant Adjutant General, Army and Division of West Mississippi by Major General A. J. Smith. The flag was eventually sent to the U.S. War Department in Washington where it was assigned Capture Number 449.
