In a skirmish at Fairfax Court House on May 31, he was wounded, giving him the distinction of the first field-grade officer to be wounded in the Civil War.

Ewell then received a commission as a brigadier general on June 17, 1861. He commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run but saw little combat. On January 24, 1862, he was promoted to major general and served alongside General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson through the Valley Campaign in Virginia. He protected Richmond during Union General George McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign, and commanded his troops successfully at the battles of Malvern Hill, Gaines’ Mill, the Seven Days Battles, and the Second Battle of Bull Run. At the Battle of Groveton, Ewell was severely wounded in the leg, which was amputated below the knee. After several months of recovery, Ewell returned to the army and participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville. On May 23, 1863, Ewell was promoted to lieutenant general to replace General Jackson, who had been mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. He served with distinction at the Second Battle of Winchester, capturing a large Federal force and supplies.

Afterward, however, his military reputation began to declines sharply. During the Battle of Gettysburg, he led his men well in the early portions of the battle on July 1. Leeordered him to assault Union positions on Cemetery Hill "if practicable," Ewell declined to do so, providing Union troops crucial time to reorganize and fortify their positions. There is much controversy about why Ewell decided not to attack on the evening of July 1, but nonetheless, many of his fellow generals blamed him for the loss at Gettysburg.

Following the Gettysburg Campaign, Ewell performed well during the Battle of the Wilderness, but again received criticism for his inaction and indecisiveness at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Following the battle, Ewell, who was suffering from health problems, was relieved of commanding his division, and sent to command the defenses of Richmond. During the retreat from Richmond, Ewell and his men were surrounded and captured at Sailor's Creek on April 6, 1865. He remained imprisoned at Fort Warren for the remainder of the war, where he and sixteen other former generals penned a letter to General Ulysses S. Grant condemning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

After the war, Ewell became a "gentleman farmer" at his wife Lizinka's estate in Spring Hill, Tennessee. He had known her since he was a teenager, but only married her after the time she spent tending to him after his amputation rekindled their romance in 1863. He also leased a successful cotton plantation in Mississippi. He was active in his local community, serving as president of the Columbia Female Academy's Board of Trustees, in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Columbia, and as president of the Maury County Agricultural Society. Throughout the rest of his life, he continued to suffer from various ailments. He and his wife died from pneumonia, three days apart, in 1872, and were buried together in Nashville.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/0885/0710/files/E617848E-A0A0-4DAB-ACF1-B1F3C8E01513.png?v=1726672135
general-robert-e-lee-1863-t-shirt
General Robert E. Stuart finally arrived late on the second day and the following day was repulsed by Union cavalry gaining no ground there.

Stuart fought his final battle on the outskirts of Richmond on May 11, 1864. The Confederate cavalry was working feverishly to deny Gen. Philip Sheridan's Federal horsemen from gaining entry into the Confederate capital. Stuart's men were able to check the Yankee advance but at a terrible cost. The Confederate cavalry chief was shot by a dismounted Michigan trooper with a pistol, and the wound proved fatal. He died the day after the battle, May 12, 1864 and was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/0885/0710/files/194C6C55-0CC8-45B5-87B2-23AD7C36481A.png?v=1706882454
general-dabney-maury-flag-stickers-magnet
General Dabney Maury Flag Stickers/Magnet

Design based on the flag used by General Dabney Maury.

Each purchase comes with three stickers or one magnet.

Historical Background:

General Maury 's career in the Confederate army is history.

The niche assigned him in the temple of fame is a high one. href="http://confederateflags.org/army/fotcaop/">Historical Background:

The Confederate Army Of the Peninsula, under the command of Major General John B. Magruder, was charged with the defense of the critical peninsula between the York and James Rivers southeast of Richmond, Virginia. On 9 April 1862, as reinforcements arrived from Northern Virginia to help counter Union General McClellan’s thrust up the peninsula, Magruder found it necessary to inform his troops that the newly arriving forces from the Army of the Potomac carried a distinctive battle flag. This circular to his men described a flag with a, “Pink Ground – Blue diagonal cross-bars with white stars along the bars – yellow border binding two inches wide.” This basically was describing the 2nd type of the silk issue “Beauregard battle flags” that had been distributed to the four divisions and outlying brigades of the Confederate Army of the Potomac in November and December of 1861.

The appearance of this “new” battle flag prompted General Magruder to adopt a distinctive battle flag for the units that had been under his command. The flag design he chose was remarkably simple — a rectangular bunting field approximately 53″ high on its hoist by 60″ on its fly. The field of this flag was divided diagonally from upper, staff corner to lower fly corner. The lower and staff corner of the flag was red; the upper and fly corner of the flag was white. A white canvas heading bearing three button hole eyelets completed the flag.

Six of the new flags were ready for distribution by 18 April, although Henry Bryan, Magruder’s adjutant-general, would not turn in a special requisition for 30 of these flags until the next day. Thirty staffs for these flags were purchased from Richmond ironmonger, L.L. Barnes three days later on 22 April. Evidently anticipating a greater need than the 30 flags requisitioned on 19 April, a total of 40 were made by Norfolk seamstress, Almedea (also spelled “Almanea”) Tompkins with bunting from the Norfolk Navy Yard, for which she was paid on 23 April 1862. Beyond the issue of six flags on 18 April, seventeen other units were destined to receive the new flags in April, accounting for 23 of the 30 requisitioned. What became of the others has yet to be discovered.

The battle flag of the Army of the Peninsula was relatively short-lived. Many, especially in D.H. Hill’s Division, were replaced as early as June of 1862 with the 2nd bunting issue battle flags from the Richmond Clothing Depot. Nevertheless, a few remained in service as late as the battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) in September of 1862. A member of the 32nd Virginia Infantry recollected that at Sharpsburg, his regiment still carried a flag that was “red and white, the dividing line between the red and white passing diagonally across the flag”, which was riddled with bullets in the Maryland battle and had its staff cut in two. Although the 32nd Virginia would retain its battle worn flag, two other flags of this pattern were taken during the campaign and were turned in to McClellan’s headquarters. Two other similar flags survive, one of which belonged to the 53rd Georgia, a later addition to Semmes’ Brigade.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/0885/0710/files/3D840B67-4306-4F7C-9EDE-79548DB2A5CF.png?v=1713958584
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/0885/0710/collections/il_fullxfull.4920277183_rnss.webp?v=1710326461
