This United States Army coat is made from an indigo dyed flannel, closed with four general service US buttons, and has a pocket on the left side.

Despite official regulations, based on surviving examples and known issuances, only about one third of the blouses produced during the American Civil War were unlined. It would appear that the lined blouse was in fact issued for fatigue purposes, regardless of the original intent.

While wildly against the regulations, field modification of clothing and equipment occurred within all armies of the North. These modifications varied greatly, ranging from simple additions of pockets to complete garment reconstruction.

This reproduction is based upon a surviving image showing a contract blouse that has had three additional pockets added to the garment (two waist and one chest). Interestingly, the individual in the image is an officer, make the use of an enlisted garment (even modified), highly unusual.
