Part of the rush of volunteers in the spring and summer of 1861, the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island would be unusually clothed by local Northern production. This included a fairly crude overshirt or oversmock/blouse made from dark indigo blue flannel and closed with a variety of civilian buttons.

Based on period images and a surviving example, there are two general styles seen. First a short overshirt pattern (roughly the length of a standard shirt). Then there is the more commonly photographed oversmock length (approximately knee length).

The construction of the shirt is based on the surviving example, including the inclusion of a right side outside pocket (on the oversmock pattern), collar gussets, wide overlapping placket, and a mixture of machine and hand sewing.
