Like most states, Kentucky had a significant form of state and local level militias comprising the Kentucky State Guard. In an effort to create uniformity amongst these units, the state issued out orders for uniform regulations.

The reproduction is based on the one surviving example worn by Private Henry Hall of the 4th Kentucky Infantry (Confederate - killed at Murfreesboro). The overall cut and design of the frock coat is similar to the pre-war M1851 Dress Coat , but with a number of embellishments in the trim pattern (including piping around the front faces. The coat is made from a grey jean cloth, lined in brown cotton, trimmed in French blue, and has shoulder reinforcement points to allow for the addition of the state regulation epaulets. The coat is closed with Kentucky State Seal buttons.
