Collection: Maryland
The Old Line State joined the Union on April 28, 1788. Her position in the Civil War is complicated, due in large part to Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus in order to maintain Federal control of the border state. Maryland never voted to secede, but was a slave state and provided troops to the Confederacy. Her motto is
Fatti maschii, parole femine, or "Strong deeds, gentle words."
