Tennessee

The state of Tennessee joined the Union on June 1, 1796, and seceded on June 8, 1861. The "Volunteer State" earned her name by providing troops in the War of 1812, and proved it to be a well-deserved title throughout the Civil War and into the 20th century. The state motto is "Agriculture and Commerce."
