“I am off and will make the attack as agreed, whether you come up or not. The Rangers of the Prairie send greetings to the Rangers of the Sea.” - General John B. Magruder.
The above quote was the message sent to the small Confederate flotilla awaiting to attack the Federal blockade force around Galveston, Texas. General Magruder had devised a risky maneuver of attacking both from land and see to retake the recently fallen city of Galveston. As part of this effort, and limited naval power, the General requested that a portion of Sibley's Brigade be placed on the "Cottonclad" CS Bayou City as a "Marine" element. With the rest of the brigade and various other Texas state forces, Magruder would attack from land and sea, retaking the city in 5 hours of fighting. The results would be the destruction and capture of two Federal gunboats and over 400 prisoners.
