The artwork depicts modern day Oklahoma, historically the land held by the five "Civilized Nations" recognized by the Confederacy - Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), Chickasaw, and Seminole nations.
The last Confederate general to surrender was Brigadier-General Stand Watie (1806-1871), who was also Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation and whose initial command included the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles - "Cherokee Braves".
