Palmetto Regiment Flag After the capture of Mexico City, Maj. Gen. William O. Butler presented the Palmetto Regiment with this flag to replace their regimental flag which had been shot nearly to pieces in combat. It survived the Civil War and accompanied the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, the old Palmetto Regiment, to Cuba during the Spanish-American War, where it became the only American flag to fly victorious over the capitals of two foreign countries. The State of South Carolina received the flag in 1900. This flag appears on the right side of the Scroll of Honor. The first Palmetto Regiment flag, the first flag raised on the citadel of Chapultepec, is depicted on the left. It disappeared during the War Between the States.
