The imagery of the "Palmetto Defender" snake wrapped around the South Carolina palmetto tree and declaring the formation of a new "Southern Republic" comes from an original 1861 South Carolina political banner. The image communicated the cultural divide between different regions of the union and their attitudes towards the concept of state sovereignty as outlined in the Constitution.
