Battle of Eutaw Springs Shirt

On September 8, 1781, an American force under the command of Nathanael Greene attacked a British force under the command of Alexander Stewart in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Despite the initial success, Greene eventually retreated from the field. The engagement was one of the final battles in South Carolina.  

Of the 4,200 troops engaged in the battle, approximately 1,500 were killed, wounded, or missing at the end of the engagement, a casualty rate of nearly 35%. 

Flag of Colonel William Washington’s Cavalry. Believed to have been carried Colonel Washington in 1781 at Cowpens and Eutaw Springs in personal encounter with Tarleton. Legend says the flag was hastily made by a lady admirer of Washington from a damask curtain.
