Nathaniel Lyon Photo and Print (Original)

Original circa 1862 to 1864 Civil War steel engraving of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, after the painting by Alonzo Chappel, published by Johnson, Fry and Co of New York. The full length seated portrait shows Lyon in Union Army uniform with epaulets, seated on a camp stool before a large tent with a sword across his lap, a campaign hat and open map resting on a small field table to his right, and a soldier holding a horse in the background at left. Lyon was the first Union general killed in the Civil War, falling at the Battle of Wilson Creek on August 10 1861, and played a key role in keeping Missouri in the Union. The sheet carries the printed credits Painted by Alonzo Chappel, the facsimile signature N Lyon, the line Likeness from a recent Photograph from life, the Johnson, Fry and Co Publishers New York imprint, and a copyright line along the bottom. A period handwritten number 12 appears in the upper right margin. Sheet measures approximately 8.25 x 11.25 inches, image approximately 5.5 x 7.6 inches. Condition: Very Good to Good. Light overall age toning, light foxing confined mostly to the outer margins, minimal soiling, light edge wear, and no visible tears or losses. The image is clean and sharp. An excellent subject for collectors of the Trans Mississippi Theater, Missouri Civil War history, and early war Union generals.
