1851 Contract Jean Cloth Overcoat
1851 Contract Jean Cloth Overcoat
Replacing the long standing model 1819/32 overcoat for the US model 1851 primary overcoat utilized by US army during civil war. While retaining previous patterns sky blue cloth it modernized the overall appearance of the army to the fashion of the 1850s.
Full length overcoat with cape extending to the mid arm. Cape closed with six general service buttons. Coat overall closed with five general service buttons, adjustable belt, and tall standing collar.
Based on a surviving example linked to a private in the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry, the coat is made from sky blue jean cloth. Given the nature of the cloth, the construction of the coat is significantly different than the kesery counterparts. All seams are machine felled, with the bottom edge being finished. The coat is lined in wool flannel and closed with the regulation M1851 General Service Buttons.
