Based on an image from the 33rd North Carolina, this garment is a great example of an early Commutation Jacket. The jacket is trimmed on the cuffs and collar with tape trim, with the epaulets being made in trim cloth. The jacket is closed with North Carolina State buttons. While the image is linked to the 33rd North Carolina, the overall style is reasonably generic amongst many early war units.
