Seen throughout the South, the simple civilian overshirt pressed into military service is seen across all of the armies of the Confederacy in the opening year of the conflict. From the gates of Richmond to Missouri, these simple shirts were used both at an individual level, but at times even to given a semblance of uniformity to the company and regiments.
This example is based on a surviving image of the 3rd Arkansas Hempstead Rifles - drummer. The shirt has trimmed collar, cuffs, and epaulets (an unusual trim feature for an overshirt).
