Confederate 4- Button “Milwaukee” Jacket
Confederate 4- Button “Milwaukee” Jacket
A wide range of "Four-Button" Confederate jackets (typically longer than standard shell jackets) have surfaced over the years. The exact origins of these garments is unclear, whereas they appear in images and surviving examples from nearly all fronts of the conflict. While they all vary in detail, the overall concept in patterning remains relatively consistent, with a one piece sleeve and four piece body (generally have at least one outside pocket).
The example offered here is based on an unidentified surviving example brought back to Milwaukee after the war. The jacket is similar to many of the other examples, with an outside pocket and overall crude but strong construction. One of the more interesting features is that the jacket body and the sleeves are made from two different jean cloths (similar shade).
