Replacing the long standing model 1819/32 overcoat for the US model 1851 primary overcoat utilized by US army during civil war. While retaining previous patterns sky blue cloth it modernized the overall appearance of the army to the fashion of the 1850s. 

Full length overcoat with cape extending to the mid arm. Cape closed with six general service buttons. Coat overall closed with five general service buttons, adjustable belt, and tall standing collar. 

Based on a two surviving examples, the coat is a mix of hand and machine sewing, with an unusual collar top stitching pattern. The coats are lined in a mix of fabrics, but include examples lined in jean cloth, flannel, and plaid/striped wools. The coat comes complete with the John. T. Martin Stamp, size stamp, and inspection stamp in the sleeve cap. 

The coat has been modified per a period image, with the removal of the cape and the addition of two hip pockets.
