While the famed Tait Jacket is most commonly associated with English imported clothing, the Confederacy imported a wide range of jackets, shirts, trousers, and overcoats. This reproduction is based on the only known example of such English overcoats imported from S. Isaac, Campbell throughout the war. Earliest shipments of overcoats occur in late 1862 and would continue with the availability of the Southern ports. Like many English goods, they made their ways into the hands of nearly all armies of the Confederacy.

The coat is made from English Army Cloth, closed with English script I buttons, and lined in white wool flannel. The garment was hand sewn - but relatively crudely when compared to other imported goods. The coat has a standing collar that can be buttons, and has the European overocoat feature of the ability to pin the skirt of the coat up for active use (much like that of the M1858 US Dress Coat).

The original coat does have one amazingly strange error in construction, that being that the original coat has two right arm sleeves. This appears to have been an error on the part of the original tailor and not part of any sort of intended patterning design.
