As adopted in 1859, the Marine Corps overcoat differs from the more commonly seen infantry and cavalry patterns seen from the 1851 regulations. The overcoat was made from a blue/gray kersey, with a long detachable cape (held in place by buttons), and closed with Marine Corps buttons. The construction of the overcoats is consistent with other similar period styles, with a mix of machine and hand work. The coat is stamped per surviving examples of Marine Corps coats.
