North Carolina State Issue 1861-1862 Trousers
North Carolina State Issue 1861-1862 Trousers
As originally adopted, the State of North Carolina originally intended to issue trousers for her troops with matching trim to that of their famed sack coats. This would be a stripe running down the outer seam in black, red, or yellow. No surviving originals of this early 1861-1862 issuance has survived, however, later production from post 1862 has and is utilized for the basis of the construction with the regulation trim applied.
North Carolina state issue trousers based on a surviving example. Similar to some of the Georgia state production, the trousers have a number of unusual features including a large back yoke and no brace buttons.
From the 1861 North Carolina Regulations:
15. For Enlisted Men.--The uniform trowsers for enlisted men will be of North Carolina gray cloth, made loose, reinforced for mounted men, with a stripe of cloth down and over the outer seams. The stripe will be black for Infantry, red for Artillery and yellow for Cavalry, one inch wide for non-commissioned staff of regiments; and sergeants--three-fourths of an inch wide for corporals and one half inch wide for privates.
