South Carolina Frock Coat - Hampton's Legion
South Carolina Frock Coat - Hampton's Legion
Like most Southern States, South Carolina had its own distinct garments produced both formally and by private individuals. During 1861-1863 there is a distinct pattern of frock coat that comes out of the region. These frocks typically are a mix of machine and hand sewing, lack skirt lining, South Carolina State Buttons, and often have exterior pockets.
This frock coat is based on the ones worn by Stephen and Moses Boynton who served in the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, Co.B Hampton's Legion. Stephen was killed May 4, 1862 at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia. It is an excellent representation of those coats being made in South Carolina during the first two years of the conflict.
