Seen throughout the South, the simple civilian overshirt pressed into military service is seen across all of the armies of the Confederacy in the opening year of the conflict. From the gates of Richmond to Missouri, these simple shirts were used both at an individual level, but at times even to given a semblance of uniformity to the company and regiments.

This variant of an overshirt bridges the gap between a overshirt and work jacket. The garment appears to be intend to be worn open, with a small closer at the top and bottom. Standing trimmed collar, epaulets, and cuffs, similar to common military jacket types. The garment is completed with a large patch pocket.
